Preventing violence and abuse in First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities

The Canadian Red Cross is a charity organization that is committed to helping people affected by adversity overcome challenges and gain greater resiliency through knowledge and skill development.

By offering education services and enhancing access to essential resources in times of need, the Canadian Red Cross honours its humanitarian mission of improving the lives of people around the world.

For people living or working in First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities, the Canadian Red Cross works to reduce the risks of harm toward others through violence and abuse prevention programs.

Violence and abuse among Aboriginal populations
Aboriginal communities face a unique set of challenges, but with assistance from organizations like the Canadian Red Cross, those living in First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities can gain valuable resources.

With programs such as Walking the Prevention Circle (WTPC), Aboriginal people can gain awareness of the history of violence and abuse in their communities and understand the changes that must be made in order to stop incidents from occurring.

The benefits of Walking the Prevention Circle
WTPC, which began in 1998 in western Canada, became a national program in 2003. Through this program, more than 300 Aboriginal communities have participated in violence and abuse prevention training.

In addition to providing information about the historical context of violence in Aboriginal communities, the program teaches critical content for prevention techniques, as well as strategies for recognizing and preventing violence against children and youth.

Participants in the course - who must be 18 years or older - are also encouraged to take Ten Steps to Creating Safe Environments for Children and Youth.

WTPC varies from six to 18 hours in length and provides participants with the tools they need to reduce abuse and harassment.
