Are you looking for an incredibly rewarding experience and opportunity?  Do you have a professional certification in the mental health field?  Are you able to deploy for 2-4 weeks to join an incredible team of health professionals within Canada wherever the call to action is?  Are you able to commit to being available on our standby roster for at least  one month?  Come join us!  The Canadian Red Cross is looking for Advisors to join our Mental Health & Psychosocial Support Roster located in every province.

The CRC seeks to fill the gaps in the planning and delivery of emergency COVID-19 testing and/or mass vaccinations and to improve access to underserved and under-resourced populations, such as Indigenous communities, remote communities, homeless, migrant workers or other high-risk populations.

As part of a national team of MHPSS Advisors, you will contribute towards CRC commitments to delivery services by addressing the psychosocial needs of those affected and contribute to individual and community capacity and resiliency in the areas of mental health and psychosocial support.

A few things you will do in this role...

  • Provide mental health care within an Emergency Response Unit (ERU) setting or health-related operation, in collaboration with other CRC service team members; 
  • Provide mental health care within other service areas as required (i.e. mobile clinics, in-patient department, isolation / outbreak areas, phone consultations/referral, etc.);  
  • Support the implementation of the safe and supportive environments and provide guidance to the operation on beneficiary protection issues; 
  • Oversee the implementation of MHPSS activities and ensure compliance to guidelines, standards and mandate; 
  • Provide technical guidance to MHPSS personnel working on the field;
  • Support the creation and / or document proper referral pathways to community MHPSS and other support services; 
  • Ensure information about supports and services in community is readily available to provide referrals to beneficiaries; 
  • Ensure that beneficiaries are aware of the feedback and complaints mechanism; 
  • Ensure minimum standards for MHPSS, child protection, gender and diversity and beneficiary accountability are met;
  • Support community mobilization and stakeholder engagement;
  • Ensure MHPSS considerations are included in the decision-making process.

What we’re looking for...

  • Professional certification or degree in public health, medicine, psychology, social work, nursing or other mental health related field;
  • Current Professional Registration (registered and in good standing) within Canada;  
  • Management experience in facilitating and/or developing and implementing community programs and strategies;
  • Knowledge and experience of the Canadian Red Cross culture, programs and principles is an asset;
  • Experience with Indigenous populations is an asset;
  • Strategic thinking skills to recognize how specific actions and messages will impact different stakeholders;
  • Able to coordinate and foster effective working relationships with various stakeholders;
  • Ability to reinforce self-determination and coping mechanisms (i.e. aiding in re-establishment of traditional forms of support and coping found in the community;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong demonstrated ability to adapt to audiences' needs (employees, management, external partners and stakeholders and community, etc.);
  • Ability to leverage existing and new relationships with various stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated ability to explore and analyze complex issues and to prepare written evaluations and recommendations for leadership;
  • Strong written and verbal communication in English is essential;
  • French/English bilingual is a strong asset and imperative in Quebec;
  • Advanced level of self-awareness, maturity and stability in order to work in an effective and professional manner.

Working Conditions

  • Service delivery is based on capacity to surge COVID Testing Assistance Response Teams (CTART) comprised of various profiles, available for 2-4-week deployment periods, within an activation window of 24–72 hours. 

  • Field missions can involve working in environments that are unstable and unpredictable requiring very strict adherence to security regulations and with limited access to basic services and will require working non-traditional hours and therefore, a demonstrated ability to work in stressful and often ambiguous conditions is required.
