Maternal, Newborn and Child Health: A Global Crisis

EVERY DAY 18,000 children die.

EVERY DAY 800 mothers die.  80% of all maternal deaths result from:

  • 5,000 children die from pneumonia and diarrhoea.
  • 1,200 children die from malaria.
  • 8,000 children die in the first 28 days of life.
  • severe bleeding (mostly bleeding after childbirth).
  • infections (usually after childbirth).
  • high blood pressure during pregnancy (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia).
  • unsafe abortion.

Most of these deaths result from inequities and can be prevented through integrated community-based programs, low cost interventions and improved access to health care, programs that the Canadian Red Cross is actively implementing in high risk countries.
