The Canadian Red Cross continues to support earthquake survivors in Haiti three years after the earthquake

The Canadian Red Cross, a worldwide humanitarian organization, plays an important role in helping those in need around the world.

Programs provided by the Canadian Red Cross allow individuals affected by emergencies and disasters to gain resources and a network of support, enabling them to experience a better quality of life.

In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Canadian Red Cross responded to the needs of people in the country with immediate and life-saving assistance. Three years later, the Canadian Red Cross is still hard at work in the region, offering a variety of services that support long-term recovery.

The Canadian Red Cross in Haiti
The earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010 resulted in widespread loss, but the work of non-profit agencies like the Canadian Red Cross has given Haitians the opportunity to gain relief.

"The Canadian Red Cross is committed to sharing expertise and resources with the Haitian Red Cross and providing communities with programming that best fits their needs," said Conrad Sauvé, secretary general and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross. "This includes facilitating projects dealing with shelter, health, violence and abuse prevention and helping to reduce the risk of future disasters."

Developing safer communities in Haiti
While many families were left without homes following the earthquake in January 2010, since 2010, the Canadian Red Cross has provided safe housing to more than 19,000 families in Port au Prince, Jacmel and Leogane.

In spring 2012, the Canadian Red Cross announced the completion of a shelter program that has placed more than 7,500 families in Jacmel and Leogane with housing.

Cash grants given by the Canadian Red Cross to 2,089 families have made rental accommodations easier to maintain through the Canadian Red Cross' involvement with the decongestion of camps in Port-au-Prince.

How you can help
In addition to building communities for Haitians in need, the Canadian Red Cross has also worked to improve job training and healthcare access, both of which are essential for sustaining lasting change in the country.

"The road to recovery is long and challenging, but the Canadian Red Cross is committed to taking the time needed to properly invest in long-term and sustainable recovery operations," said Sauvé. "Canadians can be very proud that their donations are having a lasting and meaningful impact in the lives of earthquake survivors in Haiti."
