Spring is here but so is the snow - how to stay safe on the roads

Spring is officially here, however so are the lingering effects of winter. From drops in temperature to leftover ice patches from the last snow storm, the remaining winter weather can continue to wreak havoc on your daily commute, making it important that you remain as vigilant as possible.

As one of the country's leading charity organizations, through various programs, the Canadian Red Cross strives to provide individuals the resources they need in the event of an emergency situation.

With these four tips, you can stay safe on the roads as our Canadian winter comes to an end.

1. Take a first aid and CPR course
If you want to be prepared for possible emergencies that could strike on the road, you should consider taking a first aid and CPR course. These classes can give you the fundamental skills to respond to incidents with poise and confidence, which could make a lifesaving difference to someone in need.

2. Invest in an emergency preparedness kit
When the roads are bad, you never know what kind of emergency situations you may encounter. By having an emergency preparedness kit inside your car, you can tackle whatever challenges you may face. The emergency preparedness kit allows you to provide support to yourself or others while you wait for assistance.

3. Watch the roads
Whether the streets are glazed with a coating of ice or lined with snow banks, bad weather can create problems for commuters. The best way that you can prevent harm to yourself and other vehicles is to watch the roads ahead of you and be mindful of visibility or other weather-related conditions.

4. Slow down on icy paths
If you detect that the streets are covered in ice or snow, it's imperative that you proceed with caution and give yourself extra travel time. You should also leave at least a vehicle's length between yourself and another car.
