Red Cross Agricultural Show strives to improve food security in South Sudan

Since becoming an independent country on July 9, 2011, South Sudan has faced a number of challenges, but with help from the Red Cross, the people of this African nation now have access to a variety of programs that will assist in meeting the needs of the country's 10 states.

The Canadian Red Cross in South Sudan
The Canadian Red Cross belongs to one of the world's largest charity networks and has played an important role in responding to those affected by adversity throughout South Sudan.

As part of the Canadian Red Cross' programming, the Society is training 350 progressive farmers who in turn will train five community members each in new farming techniques. In addition to this, more than 16,800 people are being reached with seeds and tools. The Canadian Red Cross is also helping 4,000 households through hygiene and sanitation programs as well as community-based health and first aid messaging.

Eastern Equatoria State's Agricultural Show
The first Agricultural Show was held in Eastern Equatoria State, South Sudan, from October 25-27, 2012. This event, part of the Community Resiliency Project developed by the Canadian Red Cross in partnership with the South Sudan Red Cross and the Government of Canada, highlighted new agricultural techniques to help individuals in the area learn more about food production and how to increase food security.

Four farmers were selected to take part in the event, each of whom was picked due to their progressive farming strategies. The participants occupied a small amount of land, yet over time enhanced their holdings. In addition, these farmers will experiment with new seed varieties, along with other new technologies. The farmers from Budi County placed third out of eight counties in the State, demonstrating the impact of Red Cross initiatives.
