Canadian Red Cross supports disaster relief programming in Indonesia

As an active non-profit organization, the Canadian Red Cross responds to emergencies and disasters around the world with assistance to those in need.

In countries such as Indonesia that are prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity, the Canadian Red Cross' support to the Indonesia Red Cross has helped to enable communities to respond and begin the rebuilding process in the wake of adversity.

The 2012 earthquake in Indonesia
Indonesia has been affected by several natural disasters - most recently, on April 11, 2012, the country was shaken by an 8.6-magnitude earthquake.

The event, which struck off the western coast of Aceh, hearkened back to the 2004 tsunami. Yet as a result of emergency preparation and preparedness, emergency officials responded swiftly and were able to help evacuate communities at-risk for tsunamis to higher ground. They also were able to quickly gather emergency supplies, ambulances and personnel.

The Canadian Red Cross in Indonesia
The rapid response of emergency personnel in the aftermath of the 2012 earthquake underscores the benefits of disaster relief and preparedness. The country's efforts to rebuild in the wake of the 2004 tsunami - along with the assistance gained from non-profit organizations like the Canadian Red Cross - demonstrates how vital these resources are.

The Canadian Red Cross has been working in Indonesia since 2005, and since then has constructed more than 5,450 stable homes for residents in disaster-prone communities in Aceh and Nias. The Canadian Red Cross developed an Environmental Health program to reduce the spread of disease caused by exposure to harmful environmental conditions - a program that has improved access to water and sanitation for more than 30,000 residents in Nias and constructed permanent public water and sanitation facilities at schools and health clinics in 15 Acehnese villages.

The Canadian Red Cross continues to support the efforts of the Indonesian Red Cross in the hopes of making communities stronger and better equipped to prepare for and manage disasters and emergencies.
