Canadian Red Cross celebrates International Youth Day

Each year, the Canadian Red Cross - one of the most active charity organizations in the country - helps vulnerable communities affected by emergencies and disasters by providing them with a vital layer of support, which in turn can reduce the impact and severity of future incidences.

With help from a team of dedicated staff and passionate volunteers, the Canadian Red Cross is able to reach out and engage individuals affected by hardships. Red Cross programs range from first aid and CPR to violence and abuse prevention, where individuals can build confidence and learn how to cope in crucial situations.

One of the most important sources of support to the work of the Red Cross are youth. Young Canadians who are committed to social change and improving the lives of those in need can invigorate the Canadian Red Cross' programs and reach out to fellow youth in unique ways.

International Youth Day
In honour of the great work that youth do every day to help people in the aftermath of emergencies, disasters and conflict, the Canadian Red Cross observes International Youth Day on August 12.

This annual event pays tribute to the hard work and perseverance of youth who work with the Canadian Red Cross and strive to change the lives of those in need, while also providing youth with a platform to address their concerns, aspirations and hopes for humanitarianism on a global scale.

However, the Canadian Red Cross isn't the only member of the Red Cross Movement that celebrates the contributions of youth volunteers. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched the Your Voice campaign, which provides youth with a forum to discuss their views on significant topics such as disasters, health, peace, inequality, participation, learning and migration.

In November 2013, the IFRC will present this feedback to the United Nations General Assembly, which will help to develop post-Millennium Development Goals beginning in 2015.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for being the voice for vulnerable people, and making your community a more caring and peaceful one for all humanity," said Ashanta Osborne-Moses, Chair of the Youth Commission for the IFRC. "Today provides a special opportunity to promote the work of the youth in your National Society and encourage more youth, adults and other organizations to join your cause," she added, at the launch of the Your Voice campaign.

Take action
The Canadian Red Cross' commitment to improving the lives of those in need has fueled a variety of humanitarian works, both in Canada and abroad.

From striving to reduce the outbreak of violence and abuse to empowering communities with disaster management skills, the Canadian Red Cross' versatile programs enable those affected by adversity to overcome their challenging circumstances and make a substantial, positive impact within their community.

Youth in Canada are encouraged to take advantage of the dynamic programs offered by the Canadian Red Cross.

By offering youth the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field, the Canadian Red Cross helps deliver essential training that provides youth with a positive experience that may impact future education and job opportunities.

Whether there's a youth in your life would make a great contribution to the Canadian Red Cross or you're eager to show your support for the humanitarian work of the organization, there are many ways you can make a difference.

By choosing to donate online or at your local Red Cross office today, you can ensure that those affected by hardship have access to the resources they need.
