What a volunteer wants

Volunteerism provides a sense of accomplishment for the person giving his or her time, as well as a boost for organizations working to improve both local and global communities. In order to maximize the benefits for both parties, volunteers need opportunities that are tailored to their skills and needs.

According to a Volunteer Canada survey, people are eager to give their time, and have clear ideas of what they want to do.

The survey revealed that individuals tend to desire group opportunities, jobs that utilize the skills they've honed in their professional lives, flexibility and fulfillment of their personal goals.

By choosing a large nonprofit with a broad reach, people may find what they are looking for because these organizations tend to have a wide array of needs. For example, volunteer opportunities with the Canadian Red Cross include positions across the country, and in a variety of sectors – from personal disaster response to community health to advisory councils and more.

People who want to find out how to volunteer should contact their local office of the Canadian Red Cross to speak with a representative who can let them know about the volunteer opportunities available, and discuss which ones may mutually benefit both the individual and the organization.
