Improve the lives of those in your community as a HELP volunteer

Each year, many Canadians suffer serious medical issues that leave them physically and emotionally vulnerable. The cost of premium healthcare can create an added burden, leaving individuals deeply in debt. During this trying time, the Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) can be an excellent resource, helping to ease the financial toll and set people on the path to safe recovery.

Just how prepared are most people for a major health crisis? According to a 2011 poll by Ipsos Reid, 90 per cent of Canadians believe a serious event like a heart attack or cancer would have a dire impact on their financial situation, with more than 50 per cent claiming that the burden would be massive. Despite this, only 58 per cent of Canadians believe they'd be ready to shoulder the costs of a major medical event - four out of 10 believe they would not be financially prepared at all.

Offered through the Canadian Red Cross in partnership with territorial/provincial governments, programs like HELP's Short Term Loan Service can mitigate the impact of a major health event by taking one of the largest factors - the high cost of necessary medical equipment - out of the equation for those recovering at home.

From mobility to bed assists, the Short Term Loan Service offers a range of equipment that can help improve the lives of those in need. In addition to manual wheelchairs, those with mobility limitations can access crutches, canes, two-wheeled walkers and many other devices that can make moving from place to place a more comfortable experience. Overbed tables and intravenous poles can help facilitate the recovery process for those who are bedridden as a result of surgery, illness or another serious medical issue.

HELP's Short Term Loan Service has provided more than 54,000 pieces of equipment to over 23,000 clients. This service is community-based and spread throughout the country, with offices in the British Columbia, Alberta and Atlantic territories.

In order to qualify, clients need to have a referral from a healthcare provider stating their basic information and the equipment that they require. Because of varying needs within a community, equipment can be subject to availability. Those seeking a specific item, like a wheelchair, should call ahead to their local Canadian Red Cross office to ensure that it's carried at that site.

Are you looking for a way to make a difference in your community? HELP's Short Term Loan Service is run exclusively by volunteer staff who are committed to improving the lives of those in need. As an Equipment Maintenance Volunteer, you'll serve a vital purpose by ensuring that devices are fully inspected for safety before being assigned to client and gain valuable experience as part of a team.

If you'd like to pursue a career in the healthcare industry but are unsure how to begin, this incredible program may be just what you've been searching for. To learn more, contact your local Red Cross office or visit the HELP Short Term Loan Service website to access the volunteer application and agreement forms.
