Africa

The Canadian Red Cross supports National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Africa in helping vulnerable communities become strong and resilient. Thousands of dedicated volunteers and staff members in Africa work day and night, often in extreme and dangerous conditions, to meet this goal. We support our partners in Africa to implement programs that improve the health of women and children, reduce risks from disasters and help communities rebuild after conflict and disaster. We believe that strong African Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are vital to real and lasting change for African communities.

Kenya

Kenya is a country in East Africa that lies on the equator with a population of 43 million inhabitants. In 2011, it was affected by a serious drought and required emergency food assistance.

Liberia

Liberia ranks 162 out of 169 countries on the Human Development Index. The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS), supported by the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) and funded by the Canadian International Development Agency, seeks to improve the overall health and resiliency of the Liberian population, specifically aiming to reduce maternal, newborn and child morbidity and mortality

Mali

Mali remains one of the poorest countries in the world. The adult literacy rate, a key aspect of poverty, is only 26 per cent. Lower education levels correlate to being less informed about healthy behaviours, which in turn results in increased disease exposure.

Madagascar, Comoros and Mauritius

Off the eastern coast of Africa lie the island nations of Madagascar, Comoros and Mauritius. This region, characterized by a great diversity of culture, weather and geology, is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters and was affected by the 2004 tsunami.

Sahel Community Gardners

As the food crisis in the Sahel expands, already affecting 18 million people in seven countries, the Red Cross Red Crescent is working in communities across the region to improve food security and provide emergency assistance.

Sudan and South Sudan

The humanitarian situation in Sudan and South Sudan is dire. Millions of people have suffered the devastating consequences of almost relentless conflict that has waged for decades and continues to wage in various parts of the countries.

West Africa Partnership Program

The people of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Mali have experienced hardships due to economic instability, conflict and natural disasters. As communities rebuild, so do the Sierra Leone, Liberian and Mali Red Cross Societies.
