SmartStart - Injury Prevention Facilitator

The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking an Injury Prevention Facilitator for the SmartStart program.  Reporting to the Winnipeg Injury Prevention/SmartStart Coordinator, the Facilitator will provide injury prevention education to newcomers through workshop facilitation.
Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate SmartStart injury prevention workshops to groups of immigrants, refugees, and newcomers to Canada, using PowerPoint, demonstration with props, and verbal instruction.  Presentations will be in English, but may use interpreters.
  • Have access to a vehicle or public transportation to get to the presentation locations.
  • Interview and/or give orientation information to potential new SmartStart volunteers.
  • Prepare presentation packages and materials as needed.
  • Attend events and activities as a representative of the SmartStart program.
  • Attend team meetings quarterly.
  • Provide feedback and ongoing content support to the program coordinator.
  • Provide administrative assistance to Program Coordinator when required.


The incumbent must have the commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Movement and model the core competencies of the CRCS: team excellence, service excellence, accountability and results focused.
  • Strong professionalism and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a team and build positive internal and external relationships.
  • Experience in public speaking, facilitating workshops, and/or instructing, especially in an EAL format or setting is beneficial.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity are required.
  • Experience working with diverse populations is an asset.
  • Be able to follow established procedures with accurate attention to detail.
  • Have strong computer skills and experience in using software programs such as MS Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills in the English language. Fluency in a second language is a definite asset.
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced environment.
  • Be able to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
  • Have access to a vehicle or public transportation to get to the activity locations.
  • This position requires a satisfactory Canadian criminal record reference check.
  • This position requires a satisfactory vulnerable sector check.
  • Completion of successful Child Abuse Registry Checks.
  • Valid First Aid certificate or willingness to complete is an assist.
  • A valid provincial driver’s license is an asset; and be able to provide an acceptable driver’s abstract.

Working Conditions and Time Commitment
  • The incumbent may need to stand for 2-3 hours when facilitating.
  • The incumbent may need to lift up to 20 kg of program materials.
  • A minimum commitment of approximately 3 – 6 hours per month is required.
  • Attendance of quarterly program team meetings is required.
  • Daytime availability is required, evening and weekend availability an asset.
  • Flexible schedule and occasional weekend and evening work will be required.
