SmartStart - Injury Prevention Program Assistant

The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking a Program Assistant for the SmartStart program.  Reporting to the Injury Prevention/SmartStart Coordinator, the Program Assistant will provide administrative assistance to the SmartStart; Injury Prevention for Newcomers program and other injury prevention initiatives. This position will also help organize program events and activities.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
  • Be a helpful observer at SMARTSTART presentations or outreach injury prevention activities delivered to groups of immigrants, refugees, and newcomers to Canada
  • Enter data into Excel spreadsheets.
  • Modify SmartStart PowerPoint presentation as required
  • Photocopy and file documents.
  • Maintain supplies and assist with clean up in physical storage space and electronic files.
  • Coordinate preparation of presentation packages and materials as needed.
  • Schedule volunteers for Injury Prevention events.
  • Conduct Internet research on various injury prevention topics.
  • Provide feedback and ongoing content support to the program coordinator
  • Attend events and activities as a representative of the program.
  • Assist in the implementation of team meetings.
  • Work collaboratively within a team to build positive internal and external relationships.
  • Assist to organize team building, content updates, and training for the Injury Prevention team members.
  • Drive to presentation locations in Winnipeg if necessary.
Qualifications
 
  • Strong professionalism and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a team and build positive internal and external relationships.
  • Be able to follow established procedures with accurate attention to detail.
  • Have strong computer skills and experience in using software programs such as MS Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills in the English language.
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Have access to a vehicle or public transportation to get to the activity locations.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced environment.
  • Be able to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
  • Excellent communication, organization and facilitation skills.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity are required.
  • Highly responsible and able to take initiative, problem solve and manage time effectively.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Fluency in a second language is a definite asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills are required.
  • Experience working with diverse populations is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Strong interest in or experience in adult education and/or injury prevention.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence an asset. Be able to provide an acceptable driver’s abstract.
  • Emergency First Aid certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Understand and support the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement.

Working Conditions and Time Commitment
 
  • The incumbent may need to stand for 2-3 hours when off-site supporting injury prevention activities.
  • The incumbent may need to lift up to 20kg of program materials.
  • A minimum commitment of approximately 8 - 10 hours per month is required
  • Attendance of quarterly program team meetings is required.
  • Daytime availability is required, evening and weekend availability an asset.
  • Flexible schedule and occasional weekend and evening work will be required.
