The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as, the most vulnerable throughout the world, is currently seeking People Services volunteers to support our unified workforce of employees and volunteers. Our People Services departments are looking for volunteers to support day to day operations, as well as operations during disaster response times. We are looking for both junior and senior HR Generalists, Volunteer Managers as well as those experienced in the areas of recruitment and/or  shared services, duties will vary depending on your level of experience.

  • Responsible to support staffing and mobilization of emergency responders. This may include recruiting, screening, selecting, orientation and scheduling personnel.
  • Provide insight and support to the People Services lead on work force planning and operational requirements.
  • Ensure accurate personnel records are in place and maintained.
  • Coordinate and track travel arrangements for deploying personnel.
  • Provide welcome services and facilitation of orientation sessions to new personnel.
  • Provide advice, monitor and support strategies regarding the health, safety and well being of all workers, with particular attention to stress management, Occupational Health and Safety, Employment Standards Act, conflict resolution and coaching of supervisors for work improvement.
  • Supervisors and Team Leads are responsible for direct and indirect supervision of People Services team members within their functional area. 
  • Participate in exit reviews and/ or operational debriefings to contribute to an environment of continual improvement. 
  • Support other Red Cross initiatives, as needed, to provide for a coordinated team effort to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable in the community.
  • Volunteers at every level are responsible for safe work practices and to adhere to practices outlined in their applicable provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Movement and modeling of the core competencies of the CRCS which are: team excellence, service excellence, accountability and results focused.
  • Passion for humanitarian work.
  • Minimum 1-3 years experience supervising others, volunteers or employees.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills in English and/or French.
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office Suite and database skills required.  Experience in Taleo  considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated skills in performance management, coaching & the ability to resolve conflict
  • Understanding of Red Cross role in disaster response, relief and recovery is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in an emergency response setting an asset
  • Ability to respond during non-traditional hours (i.e. evenings or weekends).  Some emergency response positions require long hours of work in a demanding context.
  • Education in Human Resources, Volunteer Management, Business Administration or related field and/or an equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in Human Resources or volunteer management at any level.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including handling interactions with colleagues.
  • Self-learner, high degree of autonomy and proven organizational skills.
  • The ability to deploy within the province and/or Canada for a 2 to 3 week period is essential for some emergency response roles.

 About the Canadian Red Cross Society (CRCS):
  • The majority of the work is performed in either a Red Cross  office environment or virtually from a home location with access to a computer and internet.
  • Based on operational requirements, this volunteer position may include self-scheduling in coordination with the direct supervisor.
