The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking an Equipment Cleaning and Maintenance  Volunteer for the Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP).
Reporting to the Lead Technician, this position will assist with the processing, administration, inventory control and maintenance of health equipment.  This short term loan service offers mobility, independence and safety to seniors and those recovering from illness or surgery in their homes.
Key Responsibilities
  • Systematically inspects equipment according to guidelines and identifies repairs or maintenance required
  • Performs routine maintenance according to set standards and procedures, or as directed by supervisor
  • Replaces broken or worn parts as needed and removes usable parts from irreparable equipment for reuse
  • Operates hand and power tools in accordance with proper procedures
  • Cleans and disinfects returned equipment according to Red Cross standards and procedures
  • Uses chemicals in accordance with WHMIS regulations
  • Observes routine precautions in the handling of equipment including the use of personal protective equipment and good hand hygiene practices.
  • Operates reprocessing equipment in accordance with proper procedures
  • Ensures all equipment is labeled and numbered according to inventory control and brand standards
  • Completes Product Incident Reports according to Red Cross procedures
  • Ensures equipment is stored safely in the warehouse
  • Documents equipment inspection and repair as directed by supervisor
  • Carries out shipping and receiving of equipment as required
  • Mechanical aptitude with experience in using power tools, working with parts  and operating machinery
  • This position requires a satisfactory Canadian vulnerable sector criminal record check
  • Interpersonal skills with demonstrated  ability to handle interactions with supervisors & colleagues required
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an effective team
  • Able to communicate in English required, basic English speaking and writing skills required
  • Reliable and able to effectively execute assigned tasks  
  • Basic computer skills
  • Current WHMS certification or willingness to take training
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
Working Conditions
  • This is an ongoing position and a minimum of six months commitment is desired
  • Position can involve long periods or standing and frequent reaching and bending
  • Successful volunteers/candidates will receive training and support in order to be effective, maintain safe work environment and provide excellent service to help those in need of this vital service
