Swimming Health and Safety Legislation

All Canadian Red Cross courses meet strict guidelines for content and delivery. The Canadian Red Cross Lifeguard program meets all provincial/territorial legislation requirements. The Canadian Red Cross is pursuing recognition where Red Cross Lifeguard is not identified in provincial/territory legislation.

Federal Legislation

Alberta

The Canadian Red Cross Lifeguard program meets all provincial/territorial legislation requirements. ​
 

British Columbia

The Canadian Red Cross does not currently offer the Red Cross Lifeguard program in BC in keeping with an agreement with the Lifesaving Society.

Manitoba

The Canadian Red Cross Lifeguard program meets all provincial/territorial legislation requirements. ​
 

New Brunswick

The Canadian Red Cross Lifeguard program meets all provincial/territorial legislation requirements. ​
The Government of New Brunswick has not identified regulations for the operation of public swimming pools.
 

Newfoundland and Labrador

The Canadian Red Cross Lifeguard program meets all provincial/territorial legislation requirements. ​ 
 

Northwest Territories

Quebec

The Canadian Red Cross and the Lifesaving Society have a MOU in place that restricts the Red Cross to offering Water Safety Learn-to-Swim programs and the Lifesaving Society to offering Lifeguarding programs.
