Volunteer Communications Assistant - Writer

 


Volunteer Role: Service Delivery
Department and/or Program: Communications
Location: Province-Wide

Description:

The purpose of this position will be to assist the Communications Coordinator in researching and writing various communication pieces including Volunteer Profiles and Website Stories, to fit various audiences and channels. Volunteers will work independently and opt for tasks when it fits their schedule. All materials produce remain the sole intellectual property of the Canadian Red Cross.

Reports to:

Communications Coordinator

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Identify, research and write stories for our regional website
  • Interview volunteers, research and write volunteer profiles
  • Respond to disasters as directed by the Communications Coordinator to assist Disaster Assistance Teams with media communications
  • Protect the reputation of the Red Cross

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Exceptional writing and communication skills
  • Ability and desire to work independently
  • Strong computer skills including typing and use of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • A degree in marketing, communications, journalism or a related field, or experience in the same
  • Ability to write for different audiences and channels
  • Ability to use a camera is an asset
  • Knowledge, understanding and acceptance of the seven Fundamental Principles of the Canadian Red Cross Society

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible, volunteer will be expected to take a minimum of one (1) assignment every three (3) months

Required Training and Development Opportunities:

  • Introduction to the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement
  • Four hour media training
