In a region where winter temperatures can fall below freezing, conflict-affected families face increasing hardships. The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement is responding to this growing need in Syria and neighbouring countries. Volunteers and staff with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) continue to work in difficult conditions, providing life-saving services and relief to more than 1.5 million people each month. SARC in the heavily hit community of Homs has launched a ‘Warmth to every child in need’ project, distributing winter clothes to those in need. Syrian volunteers are distributing winter clothing and blankets to families in need across the country, working through local NGOs. Since the beginning of October, the Red Cross Red Crescent has distributed nearly 35,000 blankets and 20,000 mattresses in Aleppo alone. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is working with the Turkish Red Crescent Society (TRCS) to winterize temporary shelters for approximately 100,000 people living in camps near the Syrian border. Working in partnership, the IFRC and TRCS are distributing electric radiators, hot plates, warm clothing, thermal blankets and other items, in addition to the regular provisions provided to protect these vulnerable communities. The Jordan National Red Crescent Society is also working with the IFRC to distributing 25,000 winter blankets to Syrian refugees in that country. Syrians have already suffered through 19 months of violence, and the conflict continues. Many families urgently need assistance to prepare themselves for the coming winter.
