Passenger Assistant

The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is currently seeking a Passenger Assistant.

Reporting to the Administrator, Transportation Services in Oakville, the successful candidate will provide assistance to passengers with cognitive or intellectual disabilities travelling in a family size van from pick up point to destination. You will be responsible for assisting the passenger from door to door. Entry into client’s home is not permitted; however, the successful candidate would be responsible to enter the Day Program location to facilitate safe ‘handover’ of passengers with greater needs. The Red Cross vehicle is driven by a Red Cross staff driver.

  • Offering stability to passengers from their home onto and off the vehicle and into and out of the Day Program location;
  • Assisting with carrying belongings and outer clothing during inclement weather;
  • Ensuring passengers utilize seatbelts and remain in their seats while the vehicle is moving;
  • Comforting agitated passengers, providing reassurance, reducing anxiety and defusing situations;
  • Assisting those with speech impediments and those for whom English is not their first language;
  • Providing any assistance necessary while in transit between destinations as required;
  • Assists the Driver with vehicle circle check at the beginning and end of each day;
  • Adheres to implemented strategies to support Social Justice & Diversity in accordance with Society policies and principles;
  • Integrates volunteer resources within the job’s scope of responsibility.
  • Follows all policies and procedures as required to maintain a healthy and safe working environment.
  • Performs other duties as required.

The minimum qualifications for this position are excellent communication skills with patience and compassion. The ability to work well with those who have cognitive or intellectual disabilities, memory impairment, vision and/or hearing impairments. Able to assist clients within the confines of a mini van or a 10 seat bus and work in the same environment for length of shift. Available to work unconventional hours and variable lengths of split shifts. Service operates Monday – Friday, including some holidays. Experience working with special needs clients would be an asset.

A current Red Cross Standard First Aid or equivalent certificate is required and training will be provided. Additional languages spoken would be an asset.
