7.4 magnitude earthquake shakes Guatemala
On Wednesday, November 7, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook off the coast of Guatemala. First reports indicate the most affected areas are San Marcos and Quetzaltenango, but damages in other regions are possible. Preliminary reports indicate at least 6 deaths and the collapse of 100 homes, but figures may increase as more information becomes available. According to initial assessments, the area near the epicentre has a population over 2 million people.
Just like in Canada, there are local Red Cross volunteers in Guatemala rapidly responding to meet the needs of those affected. The Guatemalan Red Cross response was immediate, providing search and rescue operations, pre-hospital care and psychosocial support. Two members of the Pan-American Disaster Response Unit are being deployed to support needs assessments.
The Canadian Red Cross has both personnel and supplies, including our field hospital, ready to be deployed quickly if needed.
