Red Cross prepares communities for tropical storms this season

As Tropical Storm Ernesto batters Belize and the Caribbean coast of Honduras and Mexico, the Red Cross has initiated its disaster response system and is helping communities.

Although Ernesto was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, the Red Cross remains ready to use its extensive disaster preparedness and response system that is in place across the Caribbean. In coordination with local authorities and other humanitarian actors, the Red Cross has been pre-positioning emergency supplies to assist communities in vulnerable regions across the affected countries.

The Belize Red Cross has mobilized 300 volunteers and is preparing to respond to the needs of vulnerable communities affected by this storm.  In Mexico, food parcels have been pre-positioned for 2,000 families, while in Guatemala, National Red Cross Intervention Teams are on alert.

Red Cross preparedness activities throughout the hurricane season include the formation and training of emergency response teams, emergency first aid courses, setting up early warning systems, disaster mitigation projects such as digging ditches, and disaster preparedness training in communities.

The Canadian Red Cross relies on generous donations to help with its recovery operations after storms like Ernesto. Our International Disaster Relief Fund (IDRF) allows us to respond within hours of an emergency. It also allows us to implement disaster preparedness programs to create stronger and more resilient communities.

Help us be ready to respond to tropical storms like Ernesto.
