Hometown Heroes

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at the Canadian Red Cross. Right now, across the country, thousands of people are performing small gestures of kindness that are having a huge impact on the people benefiting from their good deeds. Whether it is offering a hot meal to someone who is not able to cook for themselves, or providing a warm blanket and shelter to a family who has been displaced because of a house fire, Red Cross volunteers are there.

Each of our volunteers has a story to tell. They are students, seniors, professionals and tradespeople. Some are new to Canada, while others have been leaders in their communities for decades. They are your neighbours, or the person you chat with in the checkout line at the grocery store. Red Cross volunteers are everywhere. They are ordinary citizens making an extraordinary difference in our communities every day.

Across Ontario, more than 6,275 volunteers help provide many of the programs and services offered by the Canadian Red Cross, including Meals on Wheels, disaster management, youth groups, friendly visiting and HELP, our Health Equipment Loan Program, to name just a few.

Hometown Heroes is a collection of portraits of Red Cross volunteers from across Ontario. It highlights 30 people who donate their time and energy to further the mission of the Red Cross. And while this collection of stories is just a small sample of the vast network of Red Cross volunteers, their commitment to helping those in need is shared by all.

Thank you to each and every Red Cross volunteer.
