Canadian Red Cross meets the immediate needs in Attawapiskat
Through the generous support of Canadians, the Canadian Red Cross is able to meet the immediate needs of the most vulnerable families in Attawapiskat and the Attawapiskat fund is now closed.
As agreed by Chief Theresa Spence and government officials, the Canadian Red Cross mandate was to provide immediate relief to ensure the most vulnerable families will be safe and warm through the winter. To achieve this, Canadian Red Cross volunteers and staff worked closely with the community to conduct thorough needs assessments.
Immediate needs identified include items such as heaters, generators, durable winter clothing, sleeping bags, mattresses, cots, wash basins, floor mats, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, hygiene kits, insulation materials, and industrial washing and drying machines.
Flights of supplies have already arrived in the community and more are scheduled for the coming days. We anticipate that shipments and distributions should be concluded by Friday, December 16. The Canadian Red Cross continues to work closely with the community and public authorities as we carry out our work, which will address urgent needs while long-term solutions are being implemented.
The Canadian Red Cross will remain in close communication with community leaders and public authorities regarding ways we can support the community of Attawapiskat to build capacity for future emergencies through preparedness activities and volunteer training.
The Canadian Red Cross has a strong mandate in emergency response – not just internationally, but right here in Canada – and we are able to quickly mobilize our expertise and a network of trained volunteers to respond to needs immediately.
Thank you for your support.
