Red Cross responds to floods in Southern Europe

Counties in southern Europe are facing extreme weather conditions, including severe rain and storms. Most affected are south-east France and the north-west regions of Italy. Italy in particular was hit by two devastating waves of flooding in a period of ten days, which have so far left 17 dead.

In France, 11 regions were on alert after heavy rains in the Var and Alpes-Maritime regions left towns flooded, forcing hundreds to leave their homes. According to authorities, at least 750 people were evacuated from flooded areas and at least one flood-related death has been reported.

The Italian Red Cross is working around the clock to provide emergency life-saving assistance.  This includes search and rescue operations, health care, food, shelter and psychosocial support.

At this time, the Canadian Red Cross is not accepting donations for this emergency because our assistance has not yet been requested from our Sister Red Cross Societies. Once needs have been assessed, the Red Cross will determine if additional support from other Red Cross Societies, such as ours, will be required.

You may, however, consider giving to our International Disaster Relief Fund of which we often draw from when our support is immediately required, before we launch an emergency appeal. This fund also allows us to implement disaster preparedness programs, such as training local volunteers and creating early warning systems, to create stronger and more resilient communities.  To donate to this fund, please call 1-800-418-1111 or click here to donate online.
