Earthquake in Turkey

The Turkish Red Crescent is working around the clock to assist survivors and reach people trapped in the rubble following the 7.2 earthquake that hit the eastern Turkish province of Van on October 23. The government has confirmed that 217 people have been killed but there are fears that this number may increase. Current estimates say 1,090 people have been injured and hundreds more are missing.

The quake’s epicenter was below the village of Tabanli, in the eastern city of Van. The Turkish Red Crescent is focused on search and rescue efforts, but is also helping to support the immediate needs of those left homeless by the quake.

To date, over 6,000 tents and 11,000 blankets and stoves have been distributed, as well as food and clean water. The organization has established disaster management centers in the mountainous and isolated region.

The Canadian Red Cross is monitoring the situation closely and is ready to respond if needed.

The best way Canadians can help in times of emergency is with a donation to the International Disaster Relief Fund (IDRF). The IDRF allows us to respond within hours of an emergency, well before any money has been received from supporters. It also allows us to implement disaster preparedness programs, such as training local volunteers and creating early warning systems, to create stronger and more resilient communities.  To donate to the IDRF, please call 1-800-418-1111 or click here to donate online.
