Cyprus Red Cross volunteers on the spot after fatal explosion

Over 100 Red Cross volunteers have been mobilized after a massive explosion at a naval base in Cyprus today. A dozen people, including emergency workers, are reported to have been killed, with many injured. Homes in six surrounding villages have been severally damaged.

The blast was "rather like a sonic boom," said a local resident. "The doors crashed together, the glass blew in – windows, door frames, and things left their shelves. It was a total mess, as though a bomb had hit the place."

Local Red Cross volunteers are currently assessing damage, distributing water and providing psychological support to those affected by the blast.

The Canadian Red Cross is on standby and ready to assist if needed.
