
Prevention Educator
Position Title: Prevention Educator (may also include working within Aboriginal Communities) Volunteer Role: Service Delivery Program: RespectED: Violence and Abuse Prevention Service Area: Various locations throughout the Province of Alberta
Purpose: This position provides Healthy Youth Relationship Workshops to local youth, covering issues such as:
- the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships
- communication and boundary setting
- the different types of abuse
- how to get help and how to help a friend
- Training and on-going mentorship and support are provided to the volunteer.
Responsible to: RespectED Program Coordinator; RespectED Education Coordinator, and/or the Aboriginal Outreach Coordinator
Responsibilities:
- Deliver professional, sensitive Promoting Healthy Youth Relationship workshops to local youth
- Communicate closely with RespectED staff
- Attend regularly scheduled volunteer training sessions (3 hours)
- Participate in occasional program promotion at teacher’s conventions, fairs, community showcases and special events
Personal Requirements:
- Min. 18 years of age
- Reliable
- Nonjudgmental
- Open to accept constructive feedback
- Passion for working with youth and empowering them to develop healthy relationships
- Excellent communication and listening skills
- Able and willing to work independently or part of a team
- Clear annual Police Records and Child Welfare checks
- A particular familiarity with Aboriginal Communities may be required for some geographical areas throughout the Province
Training Requirements:
- Attend all sessions of classroom training and read supporting material
- Complete all home study assignments
- Prepare a Healthy Youth Relationship presentation
- Must attend an information session and/or must observe a presentation
- Complete certification process initially and meet yearly renewal requirements
Time Commitment:
- One school year
- Attend regularly scheduled volunteer training sessions (3 hours)
- Conduct 2-4 presentations a month (approx. 3 hours a presentation including prep and travel time)
- Day time availability, some flexibility in scheduling
