Red Cross response to massive earthquake in New Zealand
On February 22, 2011, the South Island of New Zealand was struck by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake. The New Zealand Red Cross is working alongside National Authorities to meet the urgent needs of affected communities. Local Red Cross volunteers are on the ground providing first aid and distributing relief supplies. Red Cross volunteers are working with the Christchurch City Council, visiting affected people in the Eastern suburbs of Christchurch. Additional Red Cross teams are expected to arrive in the coming days. The Red Cross has started Restoring Family Links activities and a telecommunications team is now operational.
Canadians wishing to help support relief efforts underway in New Zealand are encouraged to contribute by donating online, calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting their local Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked “New Zealand Earthquake Fund” and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2.
