Supporting our Sister Societies

Off the eastern coast of Africa lie the island nations of Madagascar, Comoros and Mauritius. This region, characterized by a great diversity of culture, weather and geology, is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters and was affected by the 2004 tsunami.

Following the tsunami, the Canadian Red Cross began working with the Malagasy Red Cross, Comoros Red Crescent and the Mauritius Red Cross to ensure that their staff and volunteers have the resources they need to prepare for and respond to disasters, and to work with communities to build their resilience.

Communities are the cornerstone of Red Cross and Red Crescent work. Our Sister National Societies’ programmes are designed to respond to  priorities as identified by the communities and to build their capacity to address those needs. Whether it is health education, improved water and sanitation or disaster preparedness and response, the Red Cross and Red Crescent is there to support it.

The Malagasy Red Cross, Comoros Red Crescent and Mauritius Red Cross are gaining expertise and are reaching many vulnerable people in the communities they serve. The Canadian Red Cross is proud to partner with them as they strengthen their organizations to be the best National Societies they can be.
