Asia Typhoons 2009

Each year typhoons sweep through Asia, often causing wind damage, landslides and flooding. This year is no exception with storms impacting several countries in South and East Asia. Typhoon Aila devastated parts of Bangladesh and Typhoon Morakot swept through the Philippines, Taiwan and mainland China. Hundreds have been killed and tens of thousands of people have been affected.

Red Cross staff and volunteers in all countries impacted by typhoons have been responding to the disasters by helping rescue people, distributing emergency relief supplies and providing essential services such as health care and clean water.

Canadians wishing to support Red Cross relief activities in Asia during the 2009 typhoon season may make a donation to the Canadian Red Cross “Asia Typhoons 2009” fund. Donations can be made online, by calling 1-800-418-1111 or mailed to the Canadian Red Cross, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, ON, K2P 2P2.

Please note, all funds designated “Asia Typhoons 2009” will be used to support vulnerable communities where international assistance has been requested. So far in the 2009 season, international assistance has been requested and provided in Bangladesh following Typhoon Aila.
