Canadian Red Cross youth volunteers headed to Solferino, Italy

From June 23-28, youth volunteers from around the world will come together for the 3rd World Red Cross Red Crescent Youth Meeting, in Solferino, Italy. They will share ideas, learn from each other and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the battle of Solferino, where Henry Dunant was inspired to form the International Red Cross Movement.

Dawn Abbott, Colin Gingras, James Liu, Valérie St. Charles, Kimberly Vibert and Kristi  White are the Canadian Red Cross volunteers who will be attending and sharing information about our work in violence and abuse prevention, creating safe environments for youth programming and highlighting youth as agents of change in promoting humanitarian values.

”When volunteers and staff interact with other Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies it is an opportunity to share and learn,” says Kimberly Vibert, chair of the Candian Red Cros Youth Task Force. “This is the perfect time to have an exchange of ideas from youth and look ahead to the future.”

Following five days of workshops, presentations and meetings, participants will join a torch-lit procession called the Fiaccolata, which follows the same path walked by those who carried injured soldiers from the battle field of Solferino to a medical outpost.

To wrap up the event in Solferino, two of our youth delegates will join a group of select participants to travel to Geneva, Switzerland where they will present a youth declaration to representatives of the international community .

For more information about their time in Solferino, please visit http://www.ourworld-yourmove.org/ where our volunteers, as well as youth from around the world, will be blogging about their experiences.

The International Red Cross movement’s ‘Our world. Your move.’ campaign commemorates the 150th anniversary of the battle of Solferino, the 90th anniversary of the founding of the International Federation and the 60th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions. Through this global campaign, the International Red Cross Movement is honouring these milestones by highlighting the power of individuals to make a difference.
