A Shared Responsibility: Preventing Child Sexual Abuse through Intervention, Protection and Canada's Laws - a one-day workshop for adults
Frequently, those who sexually abuse children/youth have access to young people because they are in a position of trust and authority, or because of their status in the community. Most abusers are not strangers to their victims. In fact, they may spend considerable time "grooming" their victims by befriending them and making them feel special or obligated. Bribing young victims with things that they value is a common occurrence in sexual abuse.
Because sexual abuse can involve trust, authority, trickery and bribery, it is essential that children and youth are taught how to help protect themselves. "Stay away from strangers!" is not sufficient.
To keep children safe, on of the most important things we can do is equip children with the knowledge and skills they need to avoid risky situations, and to give them an understanding of their rights to their own body. Young people need to know what is inappropriate, and how to say "no" and get help.
Learning opportunities
RespectED: Violence & Abuse Prevention programs aim to reduce and prevent the incidence of abuse or assault by helping young people and adults who work with them define abuse and recognize its indicators and its impact. For youth aged 12-18, we offer presentations called "It's Not Your Fault" that explore all forms of abuse and neglect.
RespectED offers a one-day adult workshop, developed with support from Justice Canada, that examines issues relating to child sexual abuse, prevention and Canada's legal system. More»
The RespectED c.a.r.e. Kit is designed for children ages 5-9. The Kit is delivered in schools and other learning environments. It teaches body ownership, inappropriate vs. appropriate contact, personal safety and how to get help. Concepts such as privacy, bribery, and secrecy are explored through stories and activities.
