Australia: Red Cross response to bushfires

As wild fires swept across the southern Australian state of Victoria, communities experienced the worst peace-time disaster in their country's history. According to government figures, more than 180 people perished in the flames.

More than 400 Australian Red Cross volunteers worked in relief centres in fire-affected communities to ensure that basic needs were met with food, first-aid, information and support. Approximately 5,000 people registered with the Red Cross so that worried relatives could contact them.
