What sort of volunteering opportunities are available?
Volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross are involved in providing a diverse range of services to help others in vulnerable situations. How many volunteers do you have?
Tens of thousands of Canadians generously donate their time and talents to the Canadian Red Cross. Around the world, millions of people volunteer with the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement.
Do I have to volunteer for a specific number of hours per week or month?
You can volunteer for as many hours as you can spare. There are volunteers who participate on an occasional project basis and others who volunteer regularly for years. There are volunteers who work in Red Cross offices serving clients, giving presentations and providing administrative support during regular hours and those who volunteer nights and weekends to attend council meetings, raise funds and train for and respond to local disasters. Time requirements may vary by volunteer position. Your local office will work with you to find opportunities that best fit your time availability.
What skills or qualifications do I need?
Skills and qualifications vary depending on the activities you would like to undertake. Training is provided to ensure volunteers have the skills and confidence they need to perform their duties.
What do you look for in a potential volunteer?
Enthusiasm, commitment and the willingness to uphold the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
Will I travel abroad?
No. The Canadian Red Cross does not send volunteers to work overseas. Canadian Red Cross international delegates are specially trained personnel hired to work in areas of conflict or disasters or on longer-term development projects. They can be seconded to work either for the International Committee of the Red Cross, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies or for the Canadian Red Cross To learn more about becoming an international delegate go to Work Overseas.
Do you have opportunities for young people to volunteer?
Yes. We encourage youth to be actively involved in the work of the Canadian Red Cross. A variety of opportunities are provided to help young Canadians gain life skills while giving back to their local community. Please check with your local office to talk about opportunities for youth.
