Annual General Meeting 2006

The 97th Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Red Cross took place on June 17th, 2006 at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.  Participants in the AGM included members of the Board of Governors, National Representative Members from each Zone, volunteers, staff and friends of the Society.

In a banquet dinner on the eve of the AGM, the Honorable Mr. Justice Robert Barnes and Mylene Turcotte were awarded the Order of Red Cross.  The President also paid tribute to Governors stepping off of the Board at the conclusion of the AGM:  Gemma Miranda, Eve Flynn, Blair Graham, David Lough and Bob Barnes.  She expressed her sincere appreciation to these outstanding volunteers with whom she has thoroughly enjoyed working over the years.  She commended them for their dedication and hard work on behalf of the Canadian Red Cross.

Greetings were read from Her Excellency, Michaëlle Jean, Governor General, The Right Honorable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada and Honorary Vice President of the Society and the Honorable Bill Graham, Leader of the Official Opposition and Honorary Vice President of the Society.  In addition, greetings from the Presidents of the ICRC and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies were read by Geoff Loane, Head of ICRC Regional Delegation to Washington and Michael Shulz, Deputy Head of Delegation from the Federation’s Office as Permanent Observer to the UN in New York.

As is the custom at Annual General Meetings, participants paused to pay tribute to volunteers and staff of the Canadian Red Cross who have passed away since the last Annual Meeting.  While is it not the usual practice to give names of specific individuals, two special people were honoured namely Sally Miller, Canadian Red Cross delegate who was on mission in Liberia and died only a few days earlier; and Mary MacDonald, former President of the Overseas Club and a dear friend of the Canadian Red Cross ever since she served in WWII as a Red Cross nurse.  The President, in remembering both, said that “Mary’s enthusiasm and Sally’s devotion to humanitarian service are indeed reflected in all those of our Red Cross Family who have departed from us.”

The President and the Secretary General, as required by the by-laws, presented their reports to the AGM.  Both reports can be found below.
