Red Cross 1940s

During World War II, Canadian Red Cross volunteers played an essential role in the war effort, both on the front lines and at home.

The Canadian Red Cross Corps eventually numbered 15,000 women. Of that group, the Overseas Detachment of 641 volunteers served in England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and parts of Africa.

They worked in fields such as transport, medical aid, office administration and food administration. These brave volunteers drove ambulances, helped soldiers injured at the front lines and provided services to military dependents.

The Overseas Club formed by Red Cross Corps members has met every year since the end of the war, to share stories and renew friendships. They have made financial donations to help the most vulnerable.

Although in May 2005 the Overseas Club held their final national meeting, their contributions to the Red Cross and humanity remain a rich and highly valued part of its history.
