Islanders thanked for Haiti and Pakistan disaster relief support

PEI volunteers, our PEI operations manager and a provincial cabinet minister

CHARLOTTETOWN - (October 27, 2010) - The Canadian Red Cross has thanked Islanders for their generous support of two major international disaster relief operations in 2010: the devastating Haiti earthquake and record flooding in Pakistan.

A thank-you citation was accepted by the Hon. Doug Currie (right), Minister of Public Safety, representing the Island's government and all citizens. It was presented by senior Canadian Red Cross volunteer Kent Scales and PEI Operations Manager Laura Johnson-Montigny.

The PEI government donated $50,000 for Red Cross relief work in Haiti following the devastating January 12 earthquake and $25,000 after Pakistan was hit in August by the most disastrous flooding in that country's history. Individuals and businesses in Prince Edward Island also donated close to $400,000 to the two relief efforts, and most individual donations qualified under a federal offer of matching contributions.

"We're a little province with a very big heart," said Johnson-Montigny. "We welcome every opportunity to let Islanders know how the Red Cross is using their donations to directly assist those devastated by these two horrific disasters but also felt we should provide a small but tangible record of our appreciation for their support."
