Some of the equipment available through the Health Equipment Loan Program.
Each year in the Northern BC & Yukon Region, Red Cross provides the short-term loan of clean, safe medical equipment to more than 5,000 people of all ages who are living in their homes and recovering from injury, illness or surgery.
Red Cross medical equipment includes wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, bathroom aids, etc. A referral from a health care professional is necessary for the loan of equipment.
Enhanced equipment such as four wheeled walkers, hospital beds, bath lifts, bed rails and floor to ceiling poles require a referral from an occupational or physiotherapist.
The use of medical equipment often increases a person’s ability to do little things that can increase independence and dignity – such as climbing stairs, bathing or cleaning house. A ‘walker’ can allow an elderly person to move about safely, while a wheelchair might mean the freedom of movement to take part in activities outside the home.
The Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program is community-based, operated by caring and committed volunteers who clean and maintain the equipment, provide customer service and lead efforts to continually improve the program.
