Learners gain knowledge of all forms of child/youth maltreatment. The etiology, incidence and prevalence, indicators and effects of all forms of abuse, neglect and harassment are covered. Adolescent development, cultural differences and risk factors are examined, and methods for teaching prevention are explored. While the purpose of RespectED presentations is not to elicit disclosures, learners gain knowledge of how best to handle such occurrences. On-line resources include a variety of learning activities and video vignettes, and a printed manual will be provided to Learners. How is the training interactive? Each Learner is assigned a highly-knowledgeable Trainer, who provides individual and group instruction and guidance. Trainer and Learners can communicate and collaborate through: • Discussion groups • Essay responses submitted to the Trainer • Trainer feedback on questions/responses • Phone calls, if required How long is the training program?Preventing Child/Youth Maltreatment consists of 14 courses. Each training session occurs during a scheduled block of time over 12 weeks. The average learner can complete the course in about 40-50 hours. Learners must complete all courses within that scheduled block. However, participants can complete the work on their own time. Any moderated, synchronous discussion times will be scheduled at convenient times for Learners. By completing additional training and a mentorship, Learners can become Certified as Prevention Educators with the Red Cross. How will my progress/success be assessed? The Trainer is responsible for monitoring each Learner as they progress through course material, and for assessing each Learner for course completion, based on participation in Learning Activities and performance on the Knowledge Assessment Tool (KAT).
