Many illnesses and premature deaths are a result of malnutrition, acute respiratory diseases and infectious diseases such as malaria, dengue and HIV/AIDS. Of particular concern is mother and child health in rural communities. The Canadian Red Cross works with the Honduran Red Cross to improve the lives of vulnerable people in Honduras. Red Cross / Red Crescent ActionThanks to generous donations from Canadians, and the support of the Canadian International Development Agency and the Pindoff Millennium Fund, the Canadian Red Cross works in collaboration with the Honduran Red Cross Society, the Honduran Ministry of Health and local communities to improve healthcare. The Canadian Red Cross is supporting mother and child health initiatives, disaster preparedness and building the strength of both the Honduran Red Cross Society and the local Ministry of Health. Mother and child HealthThe Canadian Red Cross supports the Honduran Red Cross in its mother and child health program, known locally as Project REDES, which means “network”. This project will directly benefit 16,000 children under the age of five, 21,600 women of reproductive age, and 2,700 pregnant women through education in the areas of infant health, maternal health, environmental health, food production and nutrition, and community first aid. Indirectly it will impact over 80,000 people. The Canadian Red Cross is currently working with five Honduran Red Cross branch offices so that they are better prepared to respond quickly when a disaster strikes.
