Ending malaria disasters in Africa
After spending time in Africa and witnessing the impact of malaria, Scotty Imrie decided to become an activist for the disease. “When a plane crash occurs it is a disaster,” says Scotty. “Can you imagine seven crashes a day? Malaria kills 3,000 children in Africa daily, an equivalent of seven Boeing 747s.”
In 2007, Scotty, a mountain climbing enthusiast, travelled across five countries in Africa over a six-week period. He saw first-hand the lives saved using a mosquito net and taking anti-malarial medication.
Upon his return to Canada, he researched several non-profit organizations online and came across the Canadian Red Cross Malaria Bites website. Scotty began fundraising for the malaria net campaign. Through friends, networks, word of mouth and social media, he was able to raise $1,800.
“By helping the Malaria Bites campaign, we can send enough nets in time across Africa to land these “planes” and end these disasters,” says Scotty.
