Nam Kiwanuka, Ambassador, Malaria Bites Campaign

After Nam Kiwanuka’s family survived a civil war in Uganda, they escaped to Canada as refugees. Since then Nam, a Ryerson journalism graduate has been a MuchMusic VJ/Videographer and a host for Rogers Sportsnet.

She has been named as one of the 20 most beautiful Canadians and in 2003 was awarded the Best Media Personality by UMAC (Urban Music Awards of Canada). Nam has interviewed the likes of Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Cameron Diaz, Shaquille O'Neal and she produced a one-hour documentary on Canadian NBA player, Jamaal Magloire.

Nam's writing has also been published in the Toronto Star, Chart, Jane Magazine and has appeared on BET, ET Canada and Al Gore's Emmy-award winning channel, Current TV. She's shared her childhood experiences of growing up in a war with Canadian Heritage and has volunteered with Warchild Canada, AMREF Canada and Journalists for Human Rights.

In December of 2006, she traveled back to Uganda to document the living conditions of those displaced by the 20 year conflict in the country's  northern region. Recently she was working in Sierra Leone as a media trainer when she contracted typhoid and malaria.

After being treated with a drug that was banned in Canada 40 years ago, Nam almost lost her life. She is excited to be working with the Canadian Red Cross to increase the country's awareness of malaria and how easily it can be prevented.

Nam returned from Mali in December 2007, where she participated in the successful Canadian Red Cross campaign to distribute 1.8 million nets to families in the country.
