The Current Situation

In the Americas, though the region has seen improvements in child mortality, maternal health is still a concern, with a ratio of 140 maternal deaths out of 100,000 live births. In addition, progress has not been experienced by all. The greatest challenge in the region is the lack of equity in health that exists within many countries, affecting the most vulnerable populations, including women, children and indigenous communities.

Our Programs

Our Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) programs in the Americas are in direct coordination with the Ministries of Health and local communities to strengthen the reach and quality of effective and low cost community health services in rural areas. Red Cross branches and local volunteers also promote innovative programs to educate and engage men’s participation in the health of their families and communities, including during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.
