On September 26, Typhoon Ketsana caused widespread damage in the Philippines killing at least 240 people and affecting more than 1.8 million.

The Red Cross response to this disaster was immediate. Red Cross teams have been working around the clock opening 130 evacuation centres, saving hundreds of people from rising flood waters and providing more than 75,000 survivors with shelter, hot meals and blankets.

Canadians wishing to support Red Cross efforts to this year’s typhoon season may give online at www.redcross.ca, call 1-800-418-1111 or contact their local Canadian Red Cross office. The 24-hour toll free line accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked “Philippines Typhoons 2009” and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 400 Cooper Street, Suite 8000, Ottawa, Ontario K2P 2H8.
