Fires in Greece

Note: The following appeal is now closed. You can support our ongoing work by donating to the Canadian Red Cross

Greece has been experiencing the worst fires in living memory, burning hundreds of thousands of square kilometres of forests, olive groves and villages, causing the country’s Prime Minister to declare a national state of emergency.  Many other areas in Greece face breakdowns in telecommunication, water supply and electricity. The Hellenic Red Cross is responding by providing search & rescue, shelter, food, basic health care and psychological support.

The Canadian Red Cross is closely monitoring the fires and is in contact with the Hellenic Red Cross to help where we can.

Canadians wishing to support the humanitarian relief efforts in Greece can help in two ways.

  • Donations to the Canadian Red Cross International Disaster Relief Fund will help us respond to the needs right now, and be ready for the next call for help, whether it’s from the fires in Greece or the next devastating disaster. The one sure fact is that the International Disaster Relief Fund will be needed soon. Canadians are encouraged to contribute by donating online and choosing “IDRF”, calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting their local Canadian Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked “International Disaster Relief Fund” and mailed to Canadian Red Cross National Office, 400 Cooper Street, Suite 8000, Ottawa, Ontario K2P 2H8.
