Recent monsoon rains in the Philippines – one of the world’s most disaster prone countries – triggered a massive landslide on February 17 in the village of Guinsaugon. . It is estimated that 281 houses and an elementary school were buried under four meters of mud. The official number of confirmed dead stands at 154, while 972 people are reported missing, including 240 staff members and students from the local school. Final figures are still being compiled but about 8,000 persons were estimated to have been affected. This area of the Philippines is among the country’s most remote and inaccessible, with poor roads and limited transport and communications links.

The Canadian Red Cross is supporting the preliminary appeal of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies with an initial contribution of $50,000.
