The Lebanese Red Cross Society, working closely with the ICRC, is attending to urgent medical needs resulting from the conflict, and working to get adequate food, water and temporary shelter to residents.

Support includes:

  • The distribution of food, blankets, hygiene kits and kitchen sets to cover the basic needs of displaced, resident or isolated families, evaluated at approximately 650,000 people.
  • Emergency Medical Services: ambulances and medical kits and equipment.
  • Food and water supplies for volunteers working at the branches.
  • Laboratory equipment and medicines for blood banks, tents, blankets, mattresses for volunteer first-aid teams and consumables for its ambulance service.

In addition, medical kits and material to treat the war-wounded have been sent to Lebanon from ICRC warehouses in Amman, Jordan and will be distributed to hospitals, dispensaries and the National Society first aid services. Hospitals and other health structures are being visited regularly to assess their most urgent needs.

Here in Canada, Canadian Red Cross volunteers are on hand at the airport in Montreal as the first entry point for travellers (in cooperation with inter-departmental government teams) to help will the reception of returnees from Lebanon. For those who need it, basic needs  - shelter, food, psycho-social help if required - will be available for 72 hours while returnees sort our their personal situations. Red Cross has already helped over 3,700 people; this number is expected to increase as flights continue to arrive. As returnees head to other parts of the country, Red Cross is on standby to assist as required.

Your financial support enables the Red Cross to meet the urgent relief needs quickly and effectively.
