Emergency response

In the hours that followed the 2010 earthquake, and more recently Hurricane Matthew, Haitian Red Cross volunteers and staff took immediate action to save lives despite the many losses they had personally endured.

Focusing on those in greatest need, the Red Cross sent Emergency Response Units (ERUs) to provide Haitian communities with medical care, shelter, clean water and emergency relief items. Timing is everything following a disaster. A quick, coordinated response is not only essential to saving lives, but is also important for creating some stability for people in a time of upheaval.
