Canadian Red Cross Announces Head of Delegation to Haiti
March 9, 2010
As the largest single-country humanitarian relief effort in the history of the Red Cross continues, Richard Clair is admirably confident in his task ahead. This week, Clair, a veteran with the Red Cross, learned that he will be leading the Canadian Red Cross mission to Haiti.
The Challenges Ahead
The Country Representative in Haiti is responsible for the development and implementation of Canadian Red Cross emergency and long term programmes.
With the rainy season already upon Haiti and the hurricane season quickly approaching, Clair emphasized the importance of aid coordination for meeting the urgent shelter needs of the survivors. “We are also using an integrated approach to providing transitional shelter – water and sanitation, support for host families taking in the homeless – these are just some examples of our multifaceted strategy.”
As Haiti’s neighbourhoods remain clogged with debris and displaced survivors struggle to rebuild, Clair admits there are immense challenges ahead. Drawing on his experience overseeing debris management initiatives, he is confident transitional shelters that can better withstand the hurricane season can be built.
A Passion for Service
Leading a Red Cross delegation in a disaster of this magnitude requires experience, determination, and most importantly, passion. “I’m inspired when I see concrete results first hand – while making a difference and improving the lives of others,” professes Clair. “I always look forward to meeting new people and experiencing a new culture. It’s really about growing as a person and taking charge of the life one wants to lead - after all, the people of Haiti also deserve these same opportunities.”.
