Chiran in Haiti: An Interview with a Delegate

Where are you working?
Jacmel, in southern Haiti.

How are you helping in Jacmel?
I am responsible for coordinating the distribution of emergency relief items in the communities in Jacmel. Our team, working closely with Haitian Red Cross volunteers, is visiting communities and conducting assessments to identify those who need our help. When we visit a family we assess their housing situation, the number of children, and the overall number of people living in the dwelling. We’ve reached 45,000 people with tents, tarps, kitchen sets, and hygiene kits - and communities in Jacmel will continue to receive our help as we begin the reconstruction phase of our work in Haiti.

What has impressed you the most about your time in Haiti?
I have to say, I am most impressed with the resiliency of the survivors and the passion of the Haitian Red Cross volunteers. They were ready to help others while their own lives were left in ruins by the devastating earthquake.

As active members of their communities, these volunteers play a crucial role in delivering aid to those who need it most. This is why it is so important to help strengthen the Haitian Red Cross – they are an essential part of disaster response efforts.

What did you find most difficult?
The sheer scale of the destruction. Upon arrival, you get a reality check – the task ahead is overwhelming. It is going to be immensely challenging to rebuild from this disaster. It is going to take a lot of time and patience. Haiti was already facing so many difficulties before the tragedy - now we must help them recover.

What are some of the challenges?
The rainy season has already begun and the hurricane season is approaching. Providing temporary shelter that will protect people from the elements is a big job. We are working as quickly as possible, along with our other shelter program partners, to get shelter to those who need it most.

What interests you the most about returning to Haiti?
The challenges. There are solutions to the challenges facing the people of Haiti and engaging is important to me. All the people and volunteers I have met are incredible.. Personally and professionally, my time in Haiti has been incredibly rewarding, and I look forward to continue helping the people as they rebuild their lives.
